Police move to arrest officers threatening to slap, detain UK traveler if he was Igbo

The Ondo State Police Command has commenced investigation into a disturbing footage of officer threatening to slap and detain a traveller at a checkpoint in the state.

It was reported that an officer of the Nigeria Police sparked outrage on social media on Friday after he was captured in a video telling a motorist that he would have arrested and detained him if he was Igbo.

The incident, which has been widely shared online, reportedly involved a Nigerian who had just returned from the United Kingdom and was stopped by police officers at a checkpoint for alleged extortion.

Reacting, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh said the command took note of the viral video with serious concern.

He said the Command “does not condone any form of unprofessional conduct by its personnel in the discharge of their duties and has therefore commenced a thorough investigation into the incident”.

Abayomi urged the individual involved to reach out to him in a bid to “provide further details that will aid the investigation and ensure appropriate redress”.
