Step-by-step guide on how to enlist in US Army national guard

The United States Army National Guard has outlined the eligibility requirements and enlistment process for individuals seeking to join its ranks.

According to the National Guard in a post on its website, recruitment is open to both US citizens and lawful permanent residents (Green Card holders), provided they meet the stipulated educational, physical and aptitude requirements.

Below are the basic eligibility criteria and the steps required to become a National Guard soldier:

Eligibility requirements

Applicants without prior military service must meet the following conditions:

Age: Be between 17 and 42 years old.

Citizenship: Be a US citizen or a lawful permanent resident with a valid Green Card.

Education: Be at least a high school junior, possess a high school diploma, or hold a General Educational Development (GED) certificate.

ASVAB: Obtain the minimum qualifying score in the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) test.

Medical and character requirements: Meet the required medical, physical fitness and moral standards.

Eight steps to enlist in the US Army National Guard

The National Guard outlines the following process for prospective recruits:

1. Complete the “Get Started” form

Submit an initial application through the National Guard’s recruitment platform.

2. Connect with a recruiter

Speak with a recruiter to discuss eligibility, career options and the enlistment process.

3. Take the ASVAB test

Complete the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery examination to determine qualification for available military occupations.

4. Visit MEPS

Report to a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) for medical examinations, background screening and final processing.

5. Get assigned to a unit

Qualified applicants are assigned to a National Guard unit based on available positions and career preferences.

6. Join the Recruitment Sustainment Program (RSP)

Participate in the RSP, which prepares recruits for military life before they begin formal training.

7. Attend Basic Combat Training

Complete basic military training to acquire fundamental soldiering skills.

8. Complete Advanced Individual Training (AIT)

Undergo specialised training in the recruit’s selected military occupational specialty before beginning active service.

The Army National Guard says the structured enlistment process is designed to prepare recruits physically, mentally and professionally for military service.

The announcement comes shortly after the United States Navy also updated its enlistment guidelines, confirming that recruitment is open to both US citizens and lawful permanent residents with valid Green Cards.
