A lawmaker in Imo State House of Assembly, Samuel Chidiebere Ogbunikpa, representing Okigwe Constituency, has urged the State Governor, Hope Uzodinma to direct the state fire service to live up to their responsibility on emergency situations.
He made the call while moving a motion on the recent fire outbreak at Eke Okigwe Market, where lots of property were reported to have been destroyed by a fire outbreak.
The lawmaker while presenting the motion on the floor of the House asked the state government to take immediate action to prevent further occurrence.
He said the damage done by the inferno was so devastating, such that shop owners are yet to recover from the shock.
The motion gained wider support from members who lent their voices, urging the Governor, to come to the aid of the affected shop owners.
Ogbunikpa also appealed to the Governor Uzodimma to make available some useful equipment such as water borehole for the supply of water, and fire-fighting trucks for emergency situations, as well establishing functional fire service stations.
“The State Government should also consider the sorry situation of the dilapidated Okigwe Fire station and repair it to modern standard, with new service truck for efficient performance to avoid re-occurrence of such incident in the future, also consider compensating the traders who lost their goods as the result of the fire outbreak.” he said.
