Oyo issues flash flood alert following NiMet forecast

The Oyo State Government, on Monday, alerted residents across the 33 Local Government Areas of the state to the heightened risk of flash floods in June 2026 following the High Impact Based Forecast issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

The state Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, who disclosed this in Ibadan, the state capital, said, “High-intensity thunderstorms and heavy surface runoff could result in temporary road overflows and community flooding.

“While the State Government has intensified the clearing of critical drainage channels across the state, residents must also play their part by ensuring that drains, gutters and waterways around their homes and communities are free of plastic bottles, silt and other waste materials that obstruct the free flow of water.

“Let me also advise motorists and pedestrians to avoid driving or walking through flooded roads, especially at night, as flash floods can be deceptive and powerful enough to sweep away vehicles and individuals.”

Aderinto, therefore, called on residents to support the government’s efforts to protect lives and property.

He warned individuals and developers against unauthorized dredging or construction activities capable of altering natural water channels or blocking drainage paths, stressing that such actions constitute violations of the state environmental laws and will attract appropriate sanctions.

The commissioner further urged residents living in low-lying valley and flood-prone communities to take proactive measures by securing their lives and property, including elevating valuable household items, important documents, and electrical appliances above floor level.

“Parents and guardians are also advised to keep children and other vulnerable persons indoors during periods of heavy rainfall to reduce exposure to danger,” Aderinto added.

He assured residents that the government had activated emergency response contingency plans, and urged everyone to remain calm, vigilant, and be safety-conscious throughout the rainy season.
