The Nation learned that the two officials died on the spot.

The rapid gunfire caused panic in the community.

A local source said, “We were going to Enugu this morning when we suddenly started hearing gunshots. Some motorists abandoned their vehicles and started running towards us. We joined too because the guns were still sounding. So, it was about thirty minutes later that we emerged from the bushes and saw those coming towards us who narrated that it was an attack on a police checkpoint.”

Ndukwe said the command will “fish out of the assailants”.

It was gathered that the gunmen engaged the policemen at the Abuja hotel in a shootout.

Three lodgers were injured, some abducted.

An ex-lawmaker was abducted from the hotel in June.

A hotel worker said the gunmen shot at doors and flogged staff.

Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh confirmed the incident.

In Abia, security officials arrested an associate of the late Obioma Nwankwo aka Osisikankwu, who once terrorised the state.

The arrested suspect simply identified as Ebelishe, believed to be behind some abductions in the state, was apprehended in his hideout where he had been holing up in the Obokwe area of Ukwa East council of the state.
