The Federal Government has kicked off in Jigawa State the distribution of relief materials donated by Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to the victims of the 2020 flood, which occurred in 16 states.

Inauguration of the distribution of the relief materials took place on Tuesday in Miga town, Miga Local Government Area and was done by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Hajiya Sadiya Umar Faruk.

She was represented by the ministry’s permanent secretary, Bashir Umar, who said the relief materials were provided by ECOWAS to complement the effort of Federal Government toward reducing the hardship faced by the flood victims.

Hajiya Faruk explained that the relief materials included cash and others, adding that ECOWAS has engaged Red Cross International to manage the distribution exercise.

According to her, 1,600 households consisting over 9,600 people were given shelter kits. Others include 65 boreholes constructed for 896 households and 65 hand-wash points.

She explained that the socio-economic impact of 2020 flood was devastating and it resulted in loss of lives and livelihoods in communities across six geopolitical zones with additional impact of COVID-19 pandemic and its containment measures exacerbating the situation in the country.
