Maryrose Richard-Obioha, the Lady Captain of IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja, says the ongoing 2021 Children’s Golf Development/Clinic will serve as a selection process.
Richard-Obioha, while speaking on Monday at the clinic’s opening ceremony at the club, said it would help to select players who would represent the club at the forthcoming Junior Open.
She noted that the intention of the club was to catch them young, adding that the children were the future champions.
“We are here to train the children and pick out the future golf champions amongst them.
“After two weeks of intensive training which will be both mental, physical and educational, we intend to select the very best amongst them who will represent the club at the forthcoming National Junior Open.
“The junior open which is a national tournament comes up a week after this particular event and will be attended by kids from all over the country.
“So, I urge all children at this clinic to work hard, stay strong and be focused as you learn not only the game of golf itself, but also the etiquette of the game as well,” the Lady Captain said.
Joy Ikwue, the club’s Vice Lady Captain, also disclosed that more than 100 children were taking part in the clinic, adding that it was meant for children from ages 5 to 18.
“We are so happy to have witnessed such a huge turnout of children who have shown interest in the game today and we are glad they are all having fun already.
“The children are divided into three categories namely: five to 10, 11 to 15 and 16 to 18 years respectively.
“We’ve been doing this for over a decade now and it’s an annual event which has always been chaired by the club’s Vice Lady Captain and has produced some notable young golfers already.
“One of such talent is 19-year-old Georgia Oboh, who has inscribed her name in the history books as the youngest and first African female golfer ever on the world stage,” she said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the clinic which began on Monday is expected to end on Aug. 6. (NAN)
