Nigeria’s diversity good for unity, says Oshun

Musa Odoshimokhe

Afenifere chieftain Olawale Oshun has said Nigeria would be better, if its leaders take advantage of its diverse culture and values by pursuing the unity of the country.

Oshun, who was the guest speaker at the Summit for Peace Building and Conflict Prevention, organised by Journalists for Democratic Rights (JODER) in Lagos recently, said it has become imperative to restructure the country.

The Afenifere chieftain said it was not just about restructuring but also looking at the constitution and clarifying the role of the Federal Government and that of the federating units.

He said: “It is obvious and healthy that our diversities, in term of values and culture, should be managed for the unity of the country. It is imperative to have it in our law that, after 10 years in a place you live, then, one can be called indigene of the community.

“Nobody should run away from restructuring. It is not just about that, but talking about the constitution. For instance, it would not be right for someone to sit in Abuja and beholding brief on the primary education affairs; this is what the local government should be doing.”

He said the Federal Government and the federation units must be willing to develop the country, adding that this would ensure peace.

He noted that arms normally flow in areas where there is insecurity, adding what is happening in the Northeast showed that no part of the country could boast of complete immunity against banditry.
